Description

NGC 3718 is an unusual spiral galaxy located just below the bowl of the Big Dipper about 48 million light years away. Its warped shape may be due to gravitational interaction with the nearby galaxy NGC 3729, which would have been shown here if I had been smart enough to check the area before shooting. This was a successful first test of our new dome automation that tracks along with the telescope, however the clouds were less cooperative and I had to toss a bunch of frames.
